A t-shirt (or tee shirt) is a shirt, usually buttonless, collarless, and pocketless, with a round neck and mostly (but not necessarily) short sleeves, that is pulled on over the head and covers most of a person's torso. The sleeves of the tshirt extend at least slightly over the shoulder but not completely over the elbow (in short-sleeve version). A shirt that is either longer or shorter than this ceases to be a t shirt. T-shirts are typically made of cotton or polyester fibers (or a mix of the two), knitted together in a jersey stitch that gives a t shirt its distinctive soft texture. Tshirts are often decorated with text and/or pictures, sometimes used to advertise. Tshirt fashions include styles for men and women, and for all age groups, including baby, youth and adult sizes.

Tshirts were originally worn as undershirts. This still occurs, but t shirts are now also frequently worn as the only piece of clothing on the top half of the body (other than possibly a bra or an undershirt vest). In the early 1950s several companies based in Miami, Florida, started to decorate t shirts with different resort names and various characters. The first company was Tropix Togs, under founder Sam Kantor, in Miami. They were the original licensee for Walt Disney characters that included Mickey Mouse and Davy Crockett. Later other companies expanded into the tee shirt printing business that included Sherry Manufacturing Company also based in Miami. Sherry started in 1948 by its owner and founder Quinton Sandler as a screen print scarf business and evolved into one of the largest screen printed resort and licensed apparel companies in the United States.
T shirts typically extends to the waist, although one fashion is for "oversized" tshirts that may extend down to the knees, namely in modern hip hop fashion. A more recent trend in women's clothing involves tight-fitting "cropped" tshirts that are short enough to reveal the midriff. Another popular trend is wearing a "long-sleeved tshirts", then putting a short sleeved tee shirt of a different color over the long sleeved shirt. This is known as "layering".

Smiley has been a registered trademark since 1971 when French businessman Franklin Loufrani created "Smiley World" to sell and license the smiley face image in the United Kingdom and Europe. The Smiley name and logo is registered and used in over 100 countries for 25 classes of goods and services.
In 2006 Wal-Mart, which prominently featured a smiley in its "Rolling Back Prices" campaign, sought to trademark the smiley face in the United States, coming into legal conflict with Loufrani and SmileyWorld over the matter. During a trademark infringement case against an online parodist, Wal-Mart again tried to claim it held the trademark rights to the yellow smiley face. The judge disagreed and in March Wal-Mart lost the case with the judge saying that Wal-Mart had no rights to the smiley face.
In 1999, Ball formed World Smile Corporation and began licensing the smiley face to fund his charitable causes. Profits are distributed to charities through the Harvey Ball World Smile Foundation, which also sponsors the annual World Smile Day Ball started in 1999 to encourage "acts of kindness".

The first acid house records were produced in Chicago, Illinois. Phuture, a group founded by Nathan " DJ Pierre" Jones, Earl "Spanky" Smith Jr., and Herbert "Herb J" Jackson, is credited with having been the first to use the TB-303 in the house music context (the instrument appeared as early as 1983 in disco via Alexander Robotnick). The group's 12-minute "Acid Tracks" was recorded to tape and was played by DJ Ron Hardy at the Music Box, where Hardy was resident DJ.
